European champions Italy will not play in the 2022 World Cup after being stunned by North Macedonia in their play-off in Palermo.

Aleksandar Trajkovski picked up the loose ball in the 92nd minute, drove forward and fired a sensational winner from outside the area.

The goal sparked wild celebrations on the North Macedonia bench, while Italy’s players and coaching staff dropped to their knees in front of their home fans.

It means Italy have failed to qualify for a second consecutive World Cup, ensuring the Azzurri will endure at least 12 years between appearances at football’s showpiece event.

It is just eight months since Roberto Mancini’s side celebrated one of their greatest triumphs – beating England at Wembley to win Euro 2020 having been considered outsiders going into the tournament.

But they have now paid the price for a disjointed – if previously unbeaten – World Cup qualification campaign during which they finished runners-up to Switzerland in their group, winning four and drawing four of their eight matches.

As expected Italy dominated possession on Thursday but failed to penetrate the resolute North Macedonia defence, registering five shots on target from 32 attempts.

The visitors, ranked 67th in the world, are rewarded for their defensive display with a play-off final against Portugal, who beat Turkey 3-1.

North Macedonia are 90 minutes away from reaching consecutive tournaments, having never reached a Euros or World Cup before qualifying for Euro 2020.

Four-time World Cup winners Italy, who are ranked sixth in the world, will watch events in Qatar in November and December from afar.

Premier League Hall Of Fame Welcomes 9th & 10th Members In Wayne Rooney & Patrick Vieira

The Premier League Hall of Fame welcomed its ninth and 10th inductees on Wednesday.

Wayne Rooney and Patrick Vieira were added to a list that already included Alan Shearer, Thierry Henry, Eric Cantona, Roy Keane, Frank Lampard, Dennis Bergkamp, Steven Gerrard and David Beckham.

Manchester United legend Rooney and Arsenal’s former title-winning captain Vieira were voted in by fans from a shortlist of nominees

Rooney is second on the EPL’s all-time list of leading scorers with 208 goals – 52 fewer than Shearer.

Ex-England captain Rooney is also one of only four players to record more than 100 Premier League assists. He has 103, while the other members of the 100+ club are Ryan Giggs (162), Cesc Fabregas (111) and Lampard (102).

Rooney is a five-time Premier League winner, having helped United to title glory in 2007, 2008, 2009, 2011 and 2013.But he burst onto the scene as a 16-year-old at Everton where he scored his first Premier League goal in a 2-1 win over Arsenal in 2002.

Arsenal were the reigning champions back then and they were skippered by Vieira, who had arrived as a relative unknown six years earlier in 1996

But by the time Vieira left the Gunners in 2005 every English football fan knew his name.

Vieira is regarded as one of the finest midfield enforcers ever to play in England, where he made 307 Premier League appearances, providing 31 goals and 34 assists.

He led Arsenal to the title in 1998, 2002 and 2004, when his side did not lose a single league game all season.

After leaving Arsenal in 2005, Vieira played in Italy with Juventus and Inter Milan before returning to England to end his career at Manchester City.

Robert Mancini snubs Mario Balotelli

Mancini leaves out Balotelli of Italy’s World Cup play-off squad
Roberto Mancini has announced a 33 man squad for the World Cup play-offs. GOAL
Italy lifted the Euro 2020 title but will rely on the playoffs to make the 2022 World Cup, and Roberto Mancini has announced his squad.

Italy head coach Roberto Mancini has left out Mario Balotelli from his squad for the upcoming World Cup playoffs, while handing maiden call-ups to Joao Pedro and Luiz Felipe. The Azzurri failed to top their World Cup qualifying group, which leaves them having to beat North Macedonia in the playoff semi-finals on Thursday to set up a meeting against Turkey or Portugal five days later. The draw means one of the two previous European Championship winners, Portugal and Italy, will not feature at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Mancini has named a 33-man squad for the upcoming clash against North Macedonia in Palermo, with Balotelli snubbed for the introduction of Cagliari forward Joao Pedro, who was born in Brazil but has an Italian passport. Lazio defender Luiz Felipe also qualifies under the same criteria and he features in the Italy squad for the first time, while Federico Chiesa and Leonardo Spinazzola miss out through injury.

Moise Kean, Alessio Romagnoli and Davide Calabria were also notable omissions, with Cristiano Biraghi expected to take Spinazzola’s full-back spot and Roma’s Nicolo Zaniolo filling in for Chiesa. Matteo Politano, Stefano Sensi and Pierluigi Gollini – who replaces the injured Napoli goalkeeper Alex Meret – all return, with Manuel Locatelli called up despite testing positive for COVID-19 on Thursday.

How to know when you are in loveđź’•

You’re happy and just a little bit nervous.
When you’re in love, you’re genuinely a happier person. It’s like you’re on a natural high. The thought of spending time with your partner really excites you and just looking at the dozens of selfies you took together is enough to put a cheesy smile on your face. But being in love also makes you a tiny bit nervous. You’re anxious for what the future holds. Because you know that you want your relationship to last.

2. Everything feels new and exciting.
When you’re in love, you’re excited to do things you’ve already done a million times before because it’s with your partner this time. They’re the first ones you think of when you see a romantic movie preview or when you’re planning to make a quick trip to the nearest fast food place. You’d even be willing to sit through four hours of a sports game if it means spending time with them..

Your relationship feels easy.
Being with your partner isn’t hard work. You don’t have to struggle to find time to spend with them because you really want to. Even the arguments don’t feel as intense as they did in other relationships. While all couples argue and bicker, when you’re both in love, your priority is your relationship, not your pride.
