Mr. Champions League, as Cristiano Ronaldo is known by fans, dealt a big blow on Tuesday night as Atletico Madrid knocked Manchester United out of the UEFA Champions League with a 2-1 aggregate win in the Round of 16. Ronaldo, who had returned to Man Utd with the hopes of winning the biggest titles in European football again, set a few embarrassing records that don’t go well with his reputation in the elite club competition.
Whenever the history of the Champions League will be written, Ronaldo’s name would arguably be on the top. The Portuguese has won a total of 5 UCL titles, with two different clubs, and is the top-scoring player in the competition. However, the past 3-4 years haven’t been kind to Ronaldo in the Champions League.
Since leaving Real Madrid in 2018, Ronaldo hasn’t been able to go beyond the quarter-final stage. In fact, it was for the second season in a row that Ronaldo’s team failed to go beyond the Round of 16 in the Champions League.
Heading into the Round of 16 second leg clash against Atletico, Manchester United were tied 1-1 on the aggregate scoreline. Ronaldo, who had hit a hat-trick against Tottenham Hotspur over the weekend, was high on confidence, not just because of form but also his history against Atletico.
