Kylian Mbappé has turned down the chance to join Real Madrid and will instead sign a new three-year contract with Paris Saint Germain.
After months of speculation over his future, his decision has sparked consternation in Spain, with La Liga swift to file a complaint, calling the deal “scandalous”.
The France forward telephoned Florentino Pérez on Saturday to communicate his decision having opted against a move to La Liga despite holding positive talks with the Spanish champions only last week. Mbappé is believed to have wanted to explain to the Real president why he had chosen to stay at his hometown club before it emerged in the media.
The 23-year-old – whose contract at PSG expires at the end of the season – has agreed a lucrative extension until 2025. Mbappé and the club president, Nasser Al Khelaifi, posed holding a “Mbappé 2025” PSG shirt before the last Ligue 1 game of the season against Metz as the crowd erupted when Al Khelaifi broke the news at the Parc des Princes.
“I have chosen to extend my contract at Paris Saint-Germain, and I am very happy. I am convinced that here I can continue to grow within a club that gives itself all the means to perform at the highest level,” he said in a club statement. “I am also very happy to be able to continue playing in France, the country where I was born, grew up and flourished.”
However, his decision has sparked outrage at La Liga, which released a strongly worded statement on Saturday night that read: “It is scandalous that a club like PSG, which last season reported losses of more than €220m after accumulating losses of more than €700m in prior seasons [while reporting sponsorship income at a doubtful valuation] with a cost of sports staff around €650m for this 2021-22 season, can face an agreement of these characteristics while those clubs that could accept the arrival of the player without seeing their wage bill compromised, are left without being able to sign him.”
Mbappé joined PSG from Monaco in 2017 in a deal worth up to €180m and has established himself as one of the world’s best players.PSG rejected several offers from Madrid for him last summer, the last worth €200m on deadline day. Mbappé scored for PSG in both legs of their Champions League defeat by Madrid this season.

The 34-year-old has scored just four goals in Ligue 1 but has managed to provide 13 assists for PSG, who were crowned French champions last weekend following a 1-1 draw with Lens.
Despite his difficulties this season, Messi has been ranked as the third best performer in European football’s top five leagues, according to stats website whoscored.com.
The rankings are based on the average match ratings for players in the Premier League, La Liga, Ligue 1, Serie A and the Bundesliga.
The ratings take into account statistics from league matches such as goals, assists, clean sheets, pass success percentage and man of the match performances.
Surprisingly, Messi comes third on the list with an average match rating of 7.71 out of 10.
Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski tops the rankings with an average match rating of 7.93, closely followed by Messi’s PSG teammate Kylian Mbappe with 7.91.
Lewandowski has scored 33 goals in 31 league games this season, while Mbappe has managed 22 goals in 31 league games for PSG.
Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema, the current favourite to win the Ballon d’Or this year, is joint-fourth on the list with an average rating of 7.68.

Paris Saint Germain won the League 1 title with characteristically disappointing result on Saturday evening, but a point was all that was required to ensure that Marseille could not match their points tally with five games left to play.
The Parisians had been leading against the 10 men of Lens until the 88th minute, when an equaliser dampened the party celebrations.
After a tight first half, Lionel Messi made the difference with a rocket of a shot from 25 yards out that was simply unbeatable.
That gave PSG the lead moments after Kevin Danso had been sent off for the away team.
However, Lens still put up a fight and struck in the 88th minute as a rapid counter attack saw the ball played across to the far post where an outstretched Corentin Jean put the ball beyond Keylor Navas.
The result is Mauricio Pochettino’s first league title as a coach, adding to his Coupe de France success and Trophee des Champions with PSG .

The 2022 Ballon d’or will be presented in October, with the prestigious award now being given to the best player over a season rather than a calendar year.
It is arguably the most eye-catching in a series of bold reforms to the award presented by France Football magazine, which will be contested among an even stronger list of nominees.
The overall winner for the prestigious honour will now be determined after journalists from L’Equipe and France Football have their say, alongside the selections from Ballon d’Or ambassador Didier Drogba.
In addition to the above, a much more streamlined voting system is set to be introduced that allows only representatives from the top 100 countries in the FIFA men’s rankings qualified to vote.
This year’s World Cup in Qatar will take place after the presentation of this year’s award, and the players’ exploits in that tournament will be judged for the following year.
But despite these fundamental changes, the usual suspects are set to battle it out once again to receive what is arguably the most respected individual award in world football.
